The Characters of Their Majesties' Pleasure

The main characters in this game are the player character (PC) and the romance options (RO). This game has a huge cast of supporting characters, many of which are fascinating in their own rights. I’ll highlight some of them below, but the main characters are the heavy hitters of the story, so I’ll go into more detail for them. We’ll start with the romance options, who can also be intriguing friends and steadfast allies if you treat them with respect.

Before we get into the characters, let’s take a moment to appreciate this artwork by Adrien Valdes. It really brings to life the characters in Their Majesties’ Pleasure.

The Characters: Romance Options (ROs)

Javier Reshan, ROGUE KING:

“Feel free to call me Majesty.” The Rogue King of the Underground deals in temptation and secrets. He’s sexy. Deadly. Sometimes poetic. Prince Julian has a crush on him. Unlike the crowned king, the Rogue has won loyalty by having people’s backs, sharing his illegally-amassed wealth, and arranging many an escape from the local prison. Dark brown eyes and hair. Tall. Brooding. Extremely protective of his city and the people who live there. Has a jagged scar on his shoulder, and another on his forearm. Wears twin swords named Vengeance and Vanquish.

GOAL: Protect the people of Threasha while making a steady profit and building an army of assassins.
MOTIVATION: Vengeance against Rumia’s king and his appointed jailer.
CONFLICT: Teams up with Prince Julian, the son of his enemy.

Prince Julian Ga’vaan, PROVOCATIVE PRINCE:

Master swordsman, long-seeing strategist, heir and traitor to the Crown. He sides with the Underground army and the Rogue in most things. Delightful joker. Can talk his way out of most anything. Forest-green eyes, dark brown hair. Has a penchant for men, women, and adventure. Good with blades. Hopeless with a bow, having been ridiculed at a young age by an impatient teacher.

GOAL: Change his father’s approach to governing Rumia.
MOTIVATION: Deep sense of duty to Rumia’s people, fun-loving soul.
CONFLICT: To save Rumia he must commit treason.

Princess Elissa Ga’vaan, REBELLIOUS PRINCESS:

Princess Lissa is ruthlessly confident. Loves to dance. Riotously fun. Sometimes, she acts as if she already sits on the throne. Other times, she gets as inebriated as she can, trying to forget who she’s destined to become. Green eyes, black hair. Obsessed with the Fae and Wilds.

GOAL: To explore the Wilds, and make peace between the Wilds and Rumia. To live it up before she has to be queen.
MOTIVATION: Fascination with Fae, Wilds.
CONFLICT: Her father wants to go to war with the Wilds. Dreads becoming queen.

Queen Edenia, FOREST QUEEN:

The darling of the Darkwood is the immortal child of a dryad and a star god. Values reciprocity and honesty. Stardust eyes, deliciously curvy body. Wears a crown of gilded leaves atop thick black hair. Talented potion maker. Consort to Prince Galen, but they maintain a respectful open relationship. Loves deeply. Destructive if provoked.

GOAL: Protect the Darkwood, maintain relative peace in the Wilds, keep her brother Beaodeth somewhat under control, enjoy her immortal life.
MOTIVATION: She has the most power of any being in the Wilds, save her brother Beaodeth, but unlike him, she also has a deep sense of responsibility and connection to the land.
CONFLICT: Beaodeth is stubborn as a black diamond and has decided it’s time Rumia paid for their trespass and slaughter.

Crown Prince Galen Lithrendel Silven, IMMORTAL WARRIOR:

Prince Galen of the Silver Tree is a reluctant member of the Fae Court, which is divided into eleven territories. Pale gold hair, blue eyes that darken with passion. His parties are legendary. He’s flirtatious. Enchanting. If you treat him right, he’ll show you the time of your life. Master warrior. Was crowned king but abdicated to his brother, who still makes him wear the crown sometimes. Hates being called Majesty.

GOAL: Protect the Court of the Silver Tree, Queen Edenia, and the Wilds.
MOTIVATION: Duty. Long memory. Having fought against ancient Rumian kings, he doesn’t want to go to war with them again and lose any more of his kin.
CONFLICT: War with Rumia, Beaodeth, and Wildlings coming for revenge make it hard to keep the peace.

The Characters: Player Character (PC)

Which romance option (RO) character appeals to you? Will you stick to conversation options, choose sweet moments, or bring on the spicy scenes?

Other Characters:

Mia Massini, BURLESQUE ASSASSIN:

Captain of the Underground Army. The Mixtress. When not kicking ass, Mia pours drinks at the Cabaret, sometimes dancing on top of the bar or doing acrobatics with silks. Anyone she takes as a lover she does by choice, for enjoyment, and she excels at all things sensual, but she belongs to no one. And never will. Until I write the sequel.

Jesme Silven of the Silver Tree, THE HUNTER:

Galen’s silver-haired cousin. Deadly. Slow to trust. Moves like a wild cat with violet eyes. Always armed to the teeth. Fierce protector of Prince Galen. Their camaraderie is one of my favorite parts of this story. Quite a few beta testers asked for Jesme to be a romance option, which would happen if I write a sequel.

Commander Bera, HONORABLE SPY:

PC’s commanding officer. She’s the same generation as the king, but disillusioned with the monarch’s rule. Her loyalty lies with the Rogue, but she plays the obedient soldier so well, even the Crown is fooled. Risks execution if caught as a spy. Hates paperwork.

Beaodeth, VENGEFUL DEMIGOD:

Awesome and terrible, with black-diamond skin and star-bright eyes, Beaodeth lives beneath the mountains and would really rather be left alone. Precarious ally with the Darkwood Queen. Furious with the Kingdom for their ever-growing mines and settlements. He might be persuaded to negotiate, but is more likely to resort to violence to get his point across.
GOAL: Get the world to piss off, take vengeance on the people who have disturbed his home.
MOTIVATION: Rumia built a mine through his mountain.
CONFLICT: Has anger issues, often doesn’t bother holding back. Edenia is the only one who can get through to him, due to their shared father.

Nenaria, LEGENDARY DIVA:

1000 years ago, Nenaria ran the theater that eventually became the Cabaret. But when soldiers from Minare invaded Threasha under the command of Cameren Ga’vaan, she retreated into the Wilds. One soldier, Kianu, ventured into the forest and happened upon a revel, where he fell in love with Nenaria. Before the night was through, he had repented his slaughter and begged her forgiveness, pledging himself to her. A week later, he returned to his unit to send a letter to his family, letting them know he was staying in Urestai with Nenaria. But before he left the city, his commander read the letter and ordered him executed.

When Nenaria found out, she rounded up three hundred Fae to infiltrate Threasha. Thus began the night of reckoning. In the morning, the only soldiers who survived were those who managed to board ships. They came back to a city of corpses, including that of Cameren Ga’vaan. Nenaria went on to Minare to carry out her vengeance, but never returned.

Nenaria’s Lament:

Here’s the first stanza of this epic fight song:

Meet me at the crossroads of Vengeance and Vanquish,
I’ll sing you a song of freedom.
We will push to the top of every hill,
And conquer our way down.
Those who stand in the way will die.
Body and soul, slaughter will I,
For the chance to live, for the chance to give,
Hell to my enemy’s Crown.

To read the rest of this rousing poem, play Their Majesties’ Pleasure and romance the Rogue. If you ask him to, he’ll recite Nenaria’s Lament in its entirety for you toward the end of the game, and you’ll understand why it lives in his soul.

Credit to the Characters

Sometimes it seems my characters are in charge of the entire creative process. It’s the best kind of chaos!

There’s no shortage of ideas in this creative mind of mine, but I really must give my characters most of the credit. They continue to surprise me, and I hope they bring a sense of joy and fulfillment to everyone who plays Their Majesties’ Pleasure!
